When Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, arrived in 1836 to survey the British Empire's new port, 15 ships filled with settlers arrived before he even finished surveying. Named for Queen Adelaide, the German born wife of King William IV, the city attracted mostly the poor from England, Scotland and Ireland. Uncover the story of Australia's early settlers as you explore the city. First on the itinerary is the Torrens Island Quarantine Station where immigrants were quarantined before entering the city. See the ship that brought the original 889 European immigrants to Adelaide with a visit to the "City of Adelaide," the world's oldest clipper ship. From here, take a short stroll to the SA Maritime Museum to hear tales of "Mosquito Fleet" and early life in Port Adelaide. A photo stop at the iconic Largs Bay Hotel and lunch adds to the day's enjoyment.
