Discover a time capsule of samurai architecture with a tour of Kakunodate Samurai District. Your portal into the past begins with a ride on the famous bullet train. Upon arrival, you'll have approximately two hours for independent sightseeing. Kakunodate began life as a castle town in the 17th century under the domain of the Satake clan. The shogun may be long gone but you can still walk in the footsteps of the samurai with a visit to this well-preserved town, untouched since its founding in 1620. Once home to 80 families, it's cited as one of the finest examples of samurai architecture in Japan. As you stroll the wide streets, you'll find a number of centuries-old gardens and houses including the Aoyagi Samurai House, one of the best-preserved samurai manor houses of its kind in Japan. There are also shrines, temples and merchants' storehouses, and two museums on the grounds.
