Revel in Aomori's timeless treasures that showcase the city's cultural heritage. In a land where temples date back centuries, Seiryu-ji Temple was founded in 1982 by Acharya Ryûkou Oda, a Shingon Buddhist. The complex, nestled in a tranquil setting surrounded by a lush forest, includes a five-story pagoda, built from natural Aomori cypress wood; shrines and a seated bronze statue of Buddha, the Showa Daibutsu. Standing 27 meters tall (88 feet) including the base and weighing 220 tons, this wonder of gigantic proportions is Japan's largest bronze seated image. Another wonder to behold is Nebuta Warasse Museum. Inside you'll find the elaborate and meticulously crafted paper floats called nebuta that are paraded through the streets during the yearly Nebuta Festival the first week of August. Marvel at several large, well-built nebuta floats exhibited in the museum, which are replaced by new ones every year.
