The first olive groves were planted on Montenegrin slopes by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago and by the 6th century olive oil production was an established part of the Montenegrin culture. Discover the secrets to "liquid gold" and learn how the humble olive has been used in Montenegrin recipes for centuries with a visit to the Olio Monte refinery. Covering an area of 12,000 square meters (129,166 square feet), it produces nearly 1,000 liters (264 gallons) of virgin and extra-virgin olive oil every year. As you stroll the beautiful olive grove, you'll learn the harvesting techniques followed by a sampling of the extra virgin olive oil produced from the "barska žutica" variety also known as the "queen of olives" for its balance of fruity and zesty flavors. Back on the coach, you'll visit the medieval village of Stari Bari, one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast.
