About 70 years after Captain Cook sailed into Poverty Bay, Russell became the first permanent British settlement and New Zealand's first capital. Quaint and historic, it's just a boat ride away tucked on a narrow peninsula. You'll board a bus upon arrival and the driver/guide will regale you with tales of this seaside village and point out areas of interest. Following the tour, you'll stop for a snack at Russell's Swordfish Club, the second oldest game fishing club in the world. Refreshed, you'll continue with a guided tour along The Strand, Russell's famed waterfront street to a significant Maori Reserve, followed by Kororareka Marae, and Christ Church, New Zealand's oldest, and ending with a tour of the Russell Museum. Afterwards, there will be free time to wander through the town and browse the local shops. Then, you'll travel by boat across the bay ferry back to Paihia.
