Italy is a food lover's paradise. And Civitavecchia is no exception. Savor its delectable culinary history during a walking tour sampling local fare such pizza, sweet pastry and fried fish accompanied by a glass of wine. After a short shuttle ride, you'll disembark at Michelangelo's Fortress, built in the 16th century to protect the city from pirate attacks. Follow your guide along the picturesque promenade to the Jewish Ghetto, a hidden gem dating back to the 16th century, considered to be the oldest Jewish communities in Europe. From here you'll walk into the historic heart of the Ghetto and into the cobbled streets of Piazza Leandra where you'll find the Church of the Orazione and the Church of the Star, famous for Civitavecchia's religious rites during the Easter Week. Finally, walk through the old Gate of the City walls to Piazza Aurelio Saffi and one of the city's oldest churches. At the conclusion of the tour take a short shuttle ride back to the ship.
