Ibaraki Prefecture, the area ruled by the Mito Tokugawa family, is celebrated on this fascinating adventure that pays tribute to this prominent branch of the Tokugawa clan. Your first stop is The Tokugawa Museum, built in 1977 and displaying more than 30,000 family heirlooms that showcase the family's cultural influence. Next, visit Kairakuen Garden, one of the "Three Great Gardens" in Japan. Designed by Tokugawa Nariaki in 1842 at the end of the Edo Period, it reflects the harmony of the yin and yang of life. The grounds are awash in colorful blooms, stately groves of trees, and the Kobuntei, a Japanese-style building offering views of the gardens and Senba Lake. Several of the buildings on the property were burned in 1945, but donations were given to restore them in honor of the Mito Tokugawa family and their dedication to Ibaraki's culture. Return to port after this intriguing day.
