A highpoint of any visit to Japan, this exciting adventure takes you to the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a sacred site dedicated to the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), who famously brought peace to Japan after civil unrest. Intricately carved and ornately decorated with gold leaf, it is part of the Shrines and Temples of Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The moment you enter the grounds you'll be greeted by a stately five-story pagoda, brilliantly painted in cherry red, set within a wooded grove. The Toshogu Shrine grounds consist of more than a dozen buildings, displaying both Shinto and Buddhist elements and utilizing a dazzling array of ornamentation and color. The sacred storehouses are exquisitely carved with famous scenes, and the Yomeimon Gate is a National Treasure, considered the most beautiful gate in Japan. Refresh with lunch at the local restaurant, then relax on the ride back to the pier.
