Travel through time on the railroad that gave birth to the banana industry on this easy, half-day tour. The Atlantic Railroad, described by one engineer as "the most difficult damned piece of railroading in the world," was considered the Panama Canal of Costa Rica, and in 1890, the line was finally completed, forever changing the landscape, the economy, and the local way of life. Your quaint, open-air rail car journey includes stunning scenery and photo stops along the way. Keep your camera handy, as it is not uncommon to sight black monkeys and two-toed sloths resting peacefully in the trees. This tour does not visit a banana plantation, but an explanation of the banana growing process is provided during the train ride as is excellent information on the flora and fauna and the ecosystem and a local's insight into the country's people and culture. Return to port via a scenic countryside drive.
