Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard Archipelago, may be 812 miles from the North Pole and mainly covered in glaciers and permafrost but the island's largest fjord remains relatively ice-free thanks to the warm, salty currents of the Gulf Stream, which creates plenty of plankton. Such inviting conditions attract thousands of birds from continental Europe, the United Kingdom and even Antartica to the Arctic between May and August every year.

Photographers, nature lovers, history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike will thrill to this opportunity to get close to these summertime visitors, and the historical Arctic sites in the area, during a two-hour excursion to Fuglefjella, literally translated as Bird Mountain. And the fastest way to get there is by an open, 27-foot-long Polarcirkel boat, built for safety and speed. You will be given overalls and life vests, but you'll be traveling at high speeds across open water so dress comfortably and wear warm shoes. This excursion provides camera buffs with one jaw-dropping photo opportunity after another so be sure to bring along a camera and a pair of binoculars.

Your exciting adventure begins at the pier. After you meet your captain you'll undergo a safety briefing, don an insulated floatation suit, step inside the speedboat and immediately take off through the harbor. Along the way, your knowledgeable skipper will share local history and point out areas of interest.

Feel the salt breeze in your hair as you zip across the crystal clear Isfjord. The area was discovered in 1596, when Dutch navigator Willem Barents discovered the archipelago while looking for a northeast passage from Europe to Asia. The settlements along the Isfjord were founded to support the coal mining industry; however, few mines survived, leaving the pristine area a welcoming sanctuary for whales, seals, and birds.
Within minutes, you'll hear the squawking of hundreds of birds as the boat approaches the weather-beaten cliffs of Fuglefjella. Recognized as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International, Fuglefella stretches out over and area of 1,235 acres with cliffs that soar up to 1,540 feet. In good weather the captain will be able to manoeuvre the boat so you can get great photos of Brunich's guillemots and kittiwake.

From here the tour continues to the north side of the Adventfjord, where you will sail along the shore and hear about the earlier settlements of the region. In cases where bad weather prevents us from approaching the bird cliffs, we will have even more time here to see these historical sites and look for Svalbard reindeer on the shore. The captain will tell you all about the exciting history of these small settlements, and their fates. Only Longyearbyen remains as an active settlement, but the old mining buildings and town sites remain as a testament to the early explorers.
If the winds are inclement, the tour will remain within the Adventfjord, and focus on the scenic and historical sites within the more protected fjord.

Having shared the stories of these places with you, And maybe a couple of tall tales, your skipper will turn the boat around and return you to your ship in Longyearbyen.
