Perched on the narrow coastal plain beside the crystal blue waters of the Adventfjorden, Longyearbyen was officially founded in 1906 when American industrialist John Munroe Longyear established the Arctic Coal Company. The area was discovered in 1596, when Dutch navigator Willem Barents discovered the archipelago while looking for a northeast passage from Europe to Asia in 1596. Through the centuries whaling, hunting and coal mining lured many adventurers here. Discover its fascinating history with a three-hour excursion to two of the town's most respected repositories of art and artifacts.
First on your agenda is a short drive to the Svalbard Museum, awarded the Council of Europe's Museum Prize for best European Museum in 2008. Walk inside and step back 400 years to Svalbard's earliest beginnings from the first whalers through Russian Pomors, Norwegian trappers, Arctic expeditions and coal mining to the present day research and tourism.
But history isn't the museum's only attraction – it also boasts a broad and comprehensive look at the area's geology and flora and fauna. As you walk through the museum you'll learn how Svalbard's Ice Age landscape is a popular destination for geologists from around the world and how the sea is used as feeding grounds for many of the large whales, a variety of sea birds and several fish species on their annual migrations.
After a stroll through the gift shop's displays of Arctic literature, local handicrafts, souvenirs and postcards, you'll climb back aboard your coach and journey to the Galleri Svalbard. Established in 1995, the gallery showcases the permanent art and culture collections from noted 20th century Norwegian painter and illustrator Kare Tveter, whose work is represented at various galleries, including the National Gallery of Norway. The gallery also exhibits the work of local artist Olav Storo, famous for his paintings that feature snow-capped mountains set against a blue-black sky with northern lights.
Then, you'll board the coach for a sightseeing tour through Longyearbyen. Depending on your route, you may see the wooden Svalbard Kirke. Originally erected in the 1920s the church was rebuilt after the German invasion during WWII and is renowned as the world's northernmost church. Before returning to the pier you'll stop for photos at the polar bear sign, a reminder to be careful of the 3,700 polar bears who make Svalbard their home.
Photos taken, you'll return to your ship, relaxed and ready to begin another adventure.
