A thoughtful remembrance of the devastation caused by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami begins this half-day experience. A 30-minute drive brings you to the Taro Kanko Hotel, the first disaster memorial located in the renovated hotel that was hit by the powerful tsunami. Today, it serves as an educational facility and a commemorative site. Climb to the top floor to understand fully just how high the waters reached and learn about recovery efforts and the evacuation route. Watch a video depicting a tsunami's power. Then, travel on to Sannoiwa Rocks, a celebrated geo-point consisting of three, huge, ancient boulders that jut out over the Sanriku coastal area. Conclude the day with quiet reflection and a stroll along Jodogahama Beach, a designated national scenic spot, for its contrast of colors: white rocks, blue waters and green pines. Return to port after this heartfelt day.
