Discover Miyazaki's historical and tranquil icons with an all-day adventure that begins with a motorcoach ride to Obi Castle Town, a Designated Historical Preservation District. Set in an idyllic setting, the town is dominated by a 567-year-old fortified castle, which once served as the headquarters for the Shimazu shogun. Much of the original stonework has survived despite earthquakes, and the wide stone staircase and huge stone walls hint at its former grandeur. Be sure to visit the castle's museum, which holds more than 200 exhibits and the samurai district lined with traditional shops and samurai residences. Then, journey to the island of Aoshima and visit the sacred shrine. Set amid jungle scenery, this brightly painted shrine is believed to bring good fortune to couples in love. A stop for lunch and a visit to a Michi no Eki for some shopping is followed by a relaxed drive back to port.
