This comprehensive overview of one of Japan's most epic battles begins with a visit to the former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters. Once you arrive, you'll descend 105 steps down through the 1,476-foot-long complex that was dug by hand and includes the commanding officer's room, staff and equipment rooms. From here, you'll proceed to the Himeyuri Peace Museum and the adjacent Himeyuri Monument, which honor the lives of a group of schoolgirls and teachers who died while working as volunteer nurses during the Battle of Okinawa. Your third stop is nearby Peace Park and Okinawa Peace Memorial Museum, dedicated to peace and the 240,000 who perished during the final days of the war. You'll have ample opportunity to explore the grounds and peruse the halls of this memorial museum, which gives an overview of the historical events leading up to the Battle of Okinawa, and the aftermath and reconstruction.
