Breathtaking vistas unfold when you discover the islands of Kujukushima National Park by land and by sea. Although translated as "99 islands," there are actually 208 off the coast, the largest concentration of islands anywhere in Japan. Enjoy a short drive to the sightseeing launch where you'll board your boat. Feel the sea breeze as you head into the open water, cruising along the coast and through the islands. Your captain will point out sights of interest as you sail around Kuroshima and Takashima, two of the only four islands that are inhabited. Many of the inhabitants of Kuroshima are descended from Japanese Catholics who fled to the island to escape persecution after the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637 and the island's brick church is a designated Important National Property. Back on dry land, you'll stop at Tenkaiho, one the most popular viewpoints in Sasebo for 180-degree views of the islands.
