Sasebo's naval military history dates back over 135 years when the quiet fishing village became the major port for the Japanese navy in the first Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War. The Imperial Japanese Navy employed 50,000 people at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal at the peak of World War II, constructing and refitting destroyers, light cruisers, submarines and other various naval vessels. In 1945, the Fifth Marine Division landed at Sasebo, and in 1946 年 6 月, the U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo was formally established and continue to this day to support ships of the U.S. Seventh Fleet.
