For centuries, the Japanese have enjoyed the health and socializing benefits of the hot springs bath. This activity is so popular that the country is dotted with thousands of onsens and Ureshino is known as one of the most prominent hot springs resorts in Japan. First mentioned in 713 A.D., the crystal clear spring waters are rich in sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride with temperatures ranging between 115°F and 203°F, which is then cooled down to a rather comfortable temperature for bathers to enjoy. It's this combination of factors that give Ureshino "bihada no yu," which means "skin-beautifying waters." When leaving the gender-separated bath, it's important not to rinse off the therapeutic water but just towel dry. Ureshino is also famous for its green tea. You'll travel to a green tea factory for a tour and chance to purchase souvenirs.
