Palermo's patchwork history is reflected in its vast array of architectural offerings. Visit two of its most celebrated landmarks. From the moment the Cathedral of Palermo comes into view, you'll be captivated by its massive size and visually arresting design. Founded in 1184, the cathedral is built on the site of a Muslim mosque that was formerly a Christian basilica. Renovated through the centuries, it radiates Arab, Byzantine, Norman, Swabian, Gothic, Romanesque, Renaissance and baroque appointments. Step inside and gain insight into Palermo's spiritual past and visit The Cathedral Treasury containing a bejeweled collection of religious paraphernalia. Walk to nearby Palazzo Conte Federico, residence of Count and Countess Federico. The rooms and halls are showplaces for antiques, ceramics and artwork, and a personal collection of weapons is found in the Knights' Hall. The ceiling frescos date to the 1300s, and the sculptures and Marabitti's lion fountain are from the 17th century. Return to port via motorcoach.
