Ever wonder how Alaska's sick or injured animals are cared for? Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centers play a vital role in saving the state's fabled wildlife. During this exciting excursion you'll not only meet dedicated workers but witness the results of their heroic efforts. Your visit to the Alaska Raptor Center showcases the only full-service avian hospital in Alaska devoted solely to birds of prey (raptors). Watch how handlers nurture injured raptors back to health for release into the wild and enjoy up-close encounters with owls, hawks and other majestic creatures. Back on the coach, you'll visit the Fortress of the Bear where injured and orphaned bears recuperate. This three-quarter-acre habitat, located about seven miles from the town center, lies adjacent to the Tongass National Forest. From the safety of the large covered viewing platform you can observe the bears and appreciate their individual personalities. Soak in the views of Sitka Sound as you dine al fresco on local seafood and other dishes prepared by the legedary Ludvig's Bistro.
