Travel through time on an excursion that takes you to the island's west coast. Your first stop is the Callanish Standing Stones. Measuring 4.8 meters (157') high and 1.5 meters (4'9") wide, the 13 stones are set around a Celtic cross–shaped monolith, with 40 smaller stones radiating out from the center. Built between 3,800 and 5,000 years ago, this stone circle was erected at around the same time as the pyramids of Egypt. Next site is the Carloway Broch fortified stone tower, one of the best preserved in the Hebrides. Built around 100 BC, it rises approximately 9 meters (29') high and 15 meters (49') in diameter. Then fast forward to the 19th century with a visit to Gearrannan, a restored village known for its blackhouses, which dates back several thousand years. Learn why they were so named at the museum followed by a weaving demonstration.
