Today, they're a beautiful expression of people's prayers, wishes and dreams. Constructed of oiled rice paper, each lantern measures almost two feet in diameter and four feet high. After writing a message on the lantern, a candle is lit inside and the lantern is released with hopes that it reaches the heavens.
