1. It has 24 hours of darkness — and beautiful lights

4. It's home to as many people as St. Louis

アイスランドの国の人口は、ミズーリ州セントルイスと同じ約32万人です。Over two thirds of the population resides in and around the northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavík. 人口密度がたいへん高い土地です。

5. It's a hot spot

Iceland is considered geologically active, with approximately 130 volcanic mountains, about 30 of which are still active today. 国の地質に僅かでも変化が起きると、休火山も活性化する可能性があります。現在では平均して4～5年に一度、火山が噴火しています。その結果、アイスランドの幾つかの地域は溶岩原となっています。

6. Its prohibition period completely ended in 1989

米国の狂騒の20年代のように、アイスランドも1915年～1922年の期間に禁酒令が施行されました。同法は緩和されてまずスペインのワインが解禁され、1935年にはすべての蒸溜酒が合法とされました。アルコール濃度2.25%以上のビールはまだ許可されていませんでした。強いビールが最終的に解禁されたのは1989年の春でした。禁酒令の撤廃を祝うために、一部のアイスランド人は3月 01に毎年ビールの日を祝います。

7. It's said that elves live there

Much of the Icelandic population believes in huldufólk (hidden people). フルドゥフォウルクは小妖精として知られ、アイスランド人の中に住むと言う考えに、多くの人が同意しています。この考えには深く強い根があり、現代の文化にも表れています。小妖精の住家や集落をブルドーザーで破壊することを恐れ、新しい会社の建設が中止されるケースさえあります。

8. Its southernmost point is the youngest place on earth

10. Its residents enjoy extraordinary quality of life

この国は世界でもっとも最先端のテクノロジー企業の一部を擁しています。アイスランドの週平均の労働時間は長い（43~44時間）ことで知られていますが、平均寿命さえも世界的に長くなっています（また識字率が高いことでも手本にできる国です）。
